Choose the right time of day
The right lighting can make all the difference in your peach blossoms photoshoot. Ideally, shooting during the golden hour, which is the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset, is always my favorite. I adore that soft, warm golden light that works so well to enhance the colors of the blossoms and create a dreamy atmosphere. However on this particular day I was gifted a dreary and cloudy day from start to finish. While it wasn’t exactly what I had envisioned, I’d rather shoot peach blossoms in lower light than in unrelenting midday sun, as this can create harsh shadows and wash out the colors of the blossoms.
Use a wide aperture for a blurred background
This is a helpful tip regardless of location, but works especially well in landscapes such as peach blossoms to create a dreamy and romantic atmosphere in your photos. A wide aperture, such as f/2.8 or lower, will create a shallow depth of field and blur the background, making the subjects the main focus of the image. This technique was extra beneficial during this particular shoot since the heavy clouds blocked out so much natural light. By using a wider aperture more light was able to reach my camera’s sensor, allowing for a faster shutter speed which helped avoid any unintentional motion blur in my photos. Experiment with different aperture settings to find the perfect balance between sharpness and blur.
Experiment with different angles and perspectives
Don't be afraid to get creative with your angles and perspectives when shooting peach blossoms. Try shooting from a low angle to capture the blossoms against the sky, or from a high angle to capture the blossoms from above. You can also experiment with shooting through the blossoms to create a unique and interesting effect. Don't be afraid to try different angles and perspectives until you find the perfect shot.
Play with lighting and shadows
Lighting is a crucial element in any photoshoot, and a peach blossoms shoot is no exception. As mentioned earlier, while there are certain times of day that typically work better than others when shooting in natural light locations such as a peach blossom orchard, there’s so much room for experimenting with the light and shadows all around. Try using shadows to add depth and texture to your images. You can also test out shooting from different angles to capture interesting shadows cast by the blossoms or use a reflector to bounce light and create unique effects.
Incorporate props and accessories
To add some extra interest and personality to your peach blossoms photoshoot, consider incorporating props and accessories. This could be anything from a vintage bicycle to a picnic basket or even a cute hat or scarf. These items can help to tell a story and add character to your photos. Just be sure to choose props that complement the natural beauty of the blossoms and don't distract from them. Despite our plans for props being cut short by soggy grass and a looming storm, I still call the entire shoot a success!
I hope these tips help make your next peach blossom shoot extra special! Regardless of the weather, time of day, lighting and so on, I’ll always jump at the opportunity to shoot in an orchard like this one. Peach blossoms can have an extremely limited and finicky blooming season, so soak up the chance while you still can!
